SAP Web Dispatcher – update on Windows

Today few words about SAP Web Dispatcher update process. Will be short because the procedure is very easy.

SAP Web Dispatcher is a load balancer and reverse proxy that can be used with different web application server backends for example ABAP and JAVA.

Today SAP recommends using the 7.89 version, which can be downloaded from here. Choose: “Support Packages & Patches” -> “By Alphabetical Index” -> “W” -> “SAP Web Dispatcher”. In this place, You’ll find appropriate version.

Update process:

  1. Open the Windows Services Manager and find the service related to your SAP Web Dispatcher installation named “SAP<SID_<instancenumber>”. Stop the service.
  2. Just in case, make a backup of the directory: NTAMD64. Typically You can find it here: <inst_drive_letter>:\usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64
  3. Using the SAPCAR.exe command unpack the archive into the executable directory, typically <inst_drive_letter>:\usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64
  4. Go back to the Windows Services Manager and start the service again.
  5. Analyze the logs in work folder and if everything is OK check also some URL via Web Disptacher to confirm it works properly.
  6. If you have problems, restore the old version from the backup – look at point 2.
